Hear or listen? These two words are easy to confuse, but the difference is simple.
We use hear when a sound comes to your ears naturally. You don’t have to try.
- I can hear the birds outside.
- Did you hear that noise?
- I heard my phone ring.
We use listen when you use your effort to pay attention to a sound.
- I’m listening to music.
- Please listen carefully.
- We listened to the teacher.
Here’s an easy way to remember:
👉 hear = sound comes to you
👉 listen = you pay attention
