
What prepositions can we use with MAKE or MADE
Today, I want to show you a few different combinations of the verb make with some prepositions. First, here’s a little story
I have an old TV that belonged to my grandfather. It’s made of wood. Well, I mean, the case is made of wood. It’s pretty unusual. In fact, it was also made in America. A wooden TV made in the USA…not so common. It’s actually an antique, from the 1940’s I believe.
We use made in to show the place that an object is manufactured:
- That TV was made in the USA.
- These days, Volkswagens that are sold in the USA are made in Mexico.
- I bought some pretzels that were made in Brooklyn.
We use made of to show the material that an object is manufactured from:
- This desk is made of wood.
- Many items these days are made of plastic.
- That looks like glass, but it is actually made of vinyl.
We use made with to show the ingredients in something, generally food:
- This is all natural ice cream. It’s made with milk, cream, sugar and vanilla.
- Don’t eat those cookies. They are made with a lot of artificial chemicals.
- This BBQ sauce is made with tomatoes, spices, and several secret ingredients.
We also use made from to show the ingredients in something, generally food:
- This is all natural ice cream. It’s made from milk, cream, sugar and vanilla.

We use made by to show the process or people used to manufacture or produce something:
- These apple pies are made by hand.
- Candy bars are made by machines in a factory.
- That jewelry was made by Native Americans
Keep in mind the best way to remember this or any vocabulary in English is to take the word or phrase write it in a sentence that’s true for you or true in your world and then memorize your sentences.
