Irregular Plural Nouns – English Vocabulary Lesson

The irregular plural form of some nouns is a different word than the singular form of the noun:

  • You can see one man or you can see several men
  • You can see one woman or you can see several women
  • You can see one wife or you can see several wives
  • You can see one person or you can see several people
  • You can see one child or you can see several children
  • You can see one foot or you can see several feet
  • You can see one tooth or you can see several teeth
  • You can see one mouse or you can see several mice
  • You can see one goose or you can see several geese
  • You can see one louse or you can see several lice
  • You can see one ox or you can see several oxen

When a noun ends in lf you can make the plural form by changing the f to ves

  • You can see one elf or you can see several elves
  • You can see one wolf or you can see several wolves
  • You can see one calf or you can see several calves
  • You can see one shelf or you can see several shelves

The rule is similar when the noun ends in f or fe. Change the f or fe to ves

  • You can see one loaf or you can see several loaves
  • You can see one knife or you can see several knives

These nouns have the same spelling in the singular and plural form

  • You can see one aircraft or you can see several aircraft
  • You can see one buffalo or you can see several buffalo
  • You can see one deer or you can see several deer
  • You can see one fish or you can see several fish
  • You can see one moose or you can see several moose
  • You can see one offspring or you can see several offspring
  • You can see one salmon or you can see several salmon
  • You can see one series or you can see several series
  • You can see one sheep or you can see several sheep
  • You can see one shrimp or you can see several shrimp
  • You can see one swine or you can see several swine
  • You can see one trout or you can see several trout
