Couldn’t I say “I am green with envy”, in situations like that, without sound impolite?
It’s not that it’s impolite, but that “envy” is a powerful word and a strong emotion. If your friend got free tickets to a concert and you did’t, you would be jealous, but not envious. The point of this lesson is that many students respond in such situations with, “Oh, I envy you” and that sounds funny to native English speakers.
